The hygiene visit
Deeper than a
toothbrush reaches.
Brushing removes soft plaque. Once it hardens into tartar, no amount of brushing will shift it. That is what a hygienist is for.
-
1.
A professional cleaning carried out by a dental hygienist, removing hardened plaque from above and below the gum line.
-
2.
A treatment for gum disease, halting and often reversing the inflammation that is the most common cause of tooth loss.
-
3.
A chance to have staining lifted from tea, coffee, wine and smoking, and to learn how to clean far more effectively at home.
Not to be confused with a check-up, which diagnoses rather than cleans.
Scale — hardened tartar removed, above and below the gum
Polish — surface staining lifted, teeth left smooth
Assess — gum pockets measured and bleeding checked
Coach — shown exactly how to clean better at home
Why it matters
Brushing is not
quite enough.
Even brilliant brushing misses roughly a third of every tooth surface. What is left behind hardens, and only a hygienist can remove it.
Gentler than most people expect.
Tartar cannot be brushed away
Within days, soft plaque hardens into tartar. Once it does, it is bonded to the tooth. No toothpaste, no electric brush, no mouthwash will shift it.
Bleeding gums are not normal
If your gums bleed when you brush, that is inflammation, not vigour. It is the first stage of gum disease, and at this point it is completely reversible.
Gum disease is silent and common
Around half of UK adults have some degree of it. It rarely hurts until the damage is done, which is exactly why regular cleaning matters so much.
You will feel the difference
Most people leave surprised. Smoother teeth, fresher breath, less bleeding, and often a noticeably brighter smile from the staining lifted away.
How it works
Your hygiene visit, step by step.
No scraping horror stories. Here is what actually happens, start to finish.
Book your hygiene visit
Call us or book online. If you have not seen a hygienist in a while, or your gums bleed, do say so when you book.
A look at your gums
We check the health of your gums first, measuring where they meet each tooth, so we know exactly what we are dealing with.
The clean itself
We remove tartar from above and below the gum line, then polish away staining. Tell us at any point if you would like a pause.
Keeping it that way
We show you how to clean more effectively at home, and agree how often you should come back. For most people it is every six months.

AirFlow stain removal
Three ingredients,
one brilliant clean.
AirFlow cleans your teeth with a fine, warm jet that sweeps away plaque, biofilm and the everyday stains left by coffee, tea and red wine. It reaches the places brushing misses, with far less of the scraping you might expect, and a smooth, glossy finish you can feel with your tongue.
Warm water
Heated for comfort, so it feels pleasant from the first second, even on sensitive teeth.
Gentle air
Carries the jet between teeth and along the gumline, where a brush struggles to reach.
Fine powder
Lifts away stains and biofilm without harshness, kind to implants, crowns and veneers.
One honest note: AirFlow is stain removal, not whitening. It brings teeth back to their natural shade, and if you would like to go lighter still, ask us about whitening at your visit.
