The check-up
More than a look
at your teeth.
A check-up is a full health assessment of your mouth. We examine, we assess, and we tell you honestly what we find.
-
1.
A routine examination of the teeth, gums, bite and soft tissues, carried out by a dentist to assess the overall health of the mouth.
-
2.
A preventive appointment, intended to identify decay, gum disease and other problems at an early stage, before symptoms appear.
-
3.
An opportunity to receive honest advice and a clear plan, with any recommended treatment explained and costed in advance.
Not to be confused with a hygiene visit, which cleans rather than diagnoses.
Teeth — decay, cracks and wear
Gums — bleeding and early disease
Bite & jaw — grinding and clicking
Tongue & cheeks — ulcers and changes
Throat — oral cancer screening
Bone — x-rays where needed
Why it matters
Small problems
stay small.
Almost every serious dental problem started as something tiny and painless. A check-up is how we find it while it is still easy to fix.
Caught early, almost everything is a small job.
Decay is silent at first
A cavity causes no pain until it reaches the nerve. By the time it hurts, a simple filling may have become a root canal or an extraction.
Gum disease is the main cause of tooth loss
It is painless, slow and extremely common. Caught early it is entirely reversible. Left alone it destroys the bone holding your teeth in.
We screen for oral cancer
Every check-up includes an examination of your tongue, cheeks and throat. Early detection makes an enormous difference to outcomes.
It costs far less to prevent
A check-up and a filling cost a fraction of a crown, a root canal or an implant. Prevention is kinder to your teeth and your wallet.
How it works
Your appointment, step by step.
Nothing complicated, and nothing you cannot handle. Here is exactly what happens.
Book your check-up
Call us or book online. Tell us if it has been a while or if you feel anxious, and we will make sure you are looked after.
A chat, then a look
We start by asking how you have been and whether anything is bothering you, then carry out a gentle, thorough examination.
What we found
We explain everything in plain English, show you any x-rays, and tell you honestly whether anything needs doing.
Your next visit
Most people come back every six months. We will let you know what is right for you and remind you when it is due.
