Children’s dentistry

Their first visits
shape the rest.

Most adults who dread the dentist had a bad experience as a child. Get this right early, and they will never think twice about coming.

Children’s dentistry /ˈtʃɪl.drənz ˈden.tɪ.stri/ Noun
  • The dental care of children, from the arrival of the first tooth through to their teenage years, adapted to each stage of growing up.

  • A preventive approach, spotting decay early, applying fluoride and sealants, and keeping baby teeth healthy so adult teeth arrive well.

  • Above all, a way of building confidence, so that a child grows up seeing the dentist as normal rather than something to fear.

Baby teeth matter. They hold the space, guide the adult teeth in, and decay in them can still cause real pain.

Why it matters

Start early,
stay relaxed.

Children who come from the very beginning rarely develop a fear of the dentist. It is the single best thing you can do for them.

A friendly face makes all the difference.

Fear is learned, not born

Very few children are naturally afraid of the dentist. They pick it up, often from a bad first experience. Come early and often, and it never takes hold.

Decay is the top reason children go to hospital

Tooth decay remains one of the most common reasons for children in England to have a general anaesthetic. Nearly all of it is preventable.

Baby teeth still matter

They hold space for the adult teeth and guide them into position. Losing them early can cause crowding that takes years of treatment to correct.

Habits form young

Brushing, diet, thumb-sucking, all of it is far easier to shape at four than at fourteen. We help you get ahead of it, without the lectures.

How it works

Their visit, step by step.

No sudden surprises. We move at their speed, and stop the moment they want to.

01 / 04

Come along together

Book them in, or simply bring them when you come. Sitting on your lap and watching you is often the perfect first visit.

02 / 04

A ride in the chair

We let them explore. Up and down in the chair, meeting the mirror, counting teeth. Nothing happens until they are happy.

03 / 04

A gentle look

When they are ready, we count their teeth and check everything is coming through as it should. It takes minutes, and it never hurts.

04 / 04

A sticker and a wave

They leave pleased with themselves, which is exactly the point. We will see them again in six months.

Every age is different

How old is
your child?

Pick an age and we will tell you honestly what happens at that visit, and what is worth knowing at that stage.

First tooth, first visit

Age 0-1

There is genuinely nothing to do at this age, and that is exactly why it works. Sit them on your lap while you have your own check-up. They watch, they get used to the room, and it becomes unremarkable long before anything ever needs treating.

  • Nothing more than a quick look
  • They can stay on your lap the whole time
  • Advice on bottles, dummies and first brushing
In short

Come along to your own appointment and bring them with you.

Milk teeth, all present

Age 2-5

Short, playful visits every six months. We count their teeth, let them hold the mirror, and check everything is healthy. From around three we can paint on fluoride varnish, which takes seconds and genuinely reduces decay.

  • Counting teeth, having a laugh
  • Fluoride varnish from age three
  • Honest advice on snacks and squash
In short

This is the age where a good habit really locks in.

Adult teeth arriving

Age 6-12

The first adult molars appear around six, right at the back, and they are the teeth most likely to decay. This is when fissure sealants earn their keep. We also start watching how the adult teeth are coming through.

  • Fissure sealants on the new back teeth
  • Watching for crowding early
  • They start answering for themselves
In short

The most important years for preventing decay.

Almost grown

Age 13+

New risks arrive: fizzy drinks, energy drinks, vaping, braces, and doing their own brushing badly. We talk to them rather than about them, which tends to work far better than nagging from a parent.

  • Straightening options if they want them
  • Straight talk about diet and vaping
  • Treated like a young adult, not a child
In short

We keep them on side, so they keep coming.

Whatever their age, the first visit is not about their teeth. It is about the room.
